About me

I was born in Scheveningen in the Netherlands and grew up there and in Saudi Arabia.  I was interested in science fairly early on, biology, geology, physics, but really fell in love with geology during my first class in college, Geology 101.  The field trips, the quirky professors, the heated debates, the puzzle that always remains to be solved, all of these fueled my desire to make Geology my future career.

I received my bachelor's from Duke University in Durham, NC where I majored in Environmental Sciences and Policy and Geology.  I went on to work for an environmental consulting outfit in DC and then in San Diego, working on groundwater remediation projects, monitoring water quality in San Diego Bay, and testing various cleanup devices to make sure water running off the southern California freeways did not adversely affect its environment.  I had a blast.  I pursued an opportunity to work at Bechtel, a major player in the construction world, next.  Here I had the chance to move up a the proverbial ladder a little to where I was organizing field efforts and leading several teams.  As the Bechtel project was winding down, I wondered what to do next, move to another office or follow this nagging dream of going back to school, even though it meant leaving my house, my adopted hometown, and everything I loved there.

So I did it....I am now working on my Master's at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences in Marine Geology, studying modern carbonate depositional environments (Yay!).  Life is sweet.

I'm currently on the tail end of my Master's research, wrapping up this Fall.  I am studying the tidal flat, tidal delta, and eolianite deposits at Shroud Cay in the Exumas, Bahamas, and trying to determine how the system developed as well as evaluating how useful Shroud Cay might be as an analogue for ancient carbonate settings.
